Jewish Wedding Rings
Browse Wedding Jewelry
It has become universal Jewish practice to use Jewish
wedding rings, except in a few
communities where a coin is used. The ring must be given to the bride
by the bridegroom and be made of plain gold. It is important for Jewish
wedding rings to be free of blemishes or ornamentations such as gemstones,
just as it is hoped the marriage will be free of useless frivolities.
The bridegroom, or chatan, takes the
wedding ring in his hand and in clear view of two
witnesses he declares to his wife the ketuvah; "Behold, you are betrothed unto me with this
ring according to the laws of Moses and Israel." The ring symbolizes the concept of the chatan
protecting and providing for his wife. Next comes the critical moment of the ceremony: the
chatan places the ring on the forefinger of his bride's right hand. According to Jewish law,
this is the exact time when the couple are fully married.
