Russian fake diamonds are among the more popular fake diamonds in the world. Although the properties of cubic zirconia were first discovered in the 1930s, it was not until the 1970's when Russian scientists found a way to create mass quantities of fake diamonds in the laboratory. Cubic zirconia did not become popular until the 1980's when Swarovski & Co. began marketing Russian fake diamonds for public consumption as an alternative to real diamonds.
