People have been known to make promises to eachother as far as societies go back. It's part of what elevates the human population one step above most mammals. A bit about pre-engagement ring history: these rings have been popular since the 16th century in Europe, where rings were often exchanged between lovers as a way to show their commitment. One type of promise rings is the popular poesy ring where vows were engraved onto the band of the ring. Another promise ring worn mostly by women is the purity ring, also known as chasity rings. These are often given to a child by parents and worn as a promise to not have sexual relations until marriage.

When to give a pre-engagement ring: when you are almost sure that the woman/man you love is the one you want to marry. Or if you are sure, but just too broke at the time to get a real, expensive engagement ring.
