There are many options for romantics who just can't get over the old
fashion look of Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco Styles. Although most
jewelers are honest and up front with their antique reproductions, some
attempt to pass replicas off as authentic.
What to Look For:
There are many misconceptions involving antique reproductions. Many people
believe that a piece must be authentic if it contains rose cut diamonds
because rose cuts were replaced by single cut diamonds in the1900s. Not
True. Old cut stones such as rose, old mine, and European cuts are being
manufactured due to the rising demand of antique cut stones.
India, Asia, and Turkey are currently manufacturing poor Georgian and
early Victorian replicas. These items are made from 18K to 22K gold and
tend to use poor quality gemstones. Although the items are hand crafted,
the finished products reveal very little craftsmanship.
Beware of crudely cut and poorly matched stones.
Don't make the mistake of assuming a piece that is poorly made is old.
Beware if the item looks brand new and you are told that it was in stuck
in an attic and never worn.
