Exclusively found in the East African country of Tanzania just below Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzanite is a recent find first discovered by Massai herders in the late 1960s.
When New York Jeweler, Louis Comfort Tiffany was presented with the first Tanzanites available to jewelry dealers, he was convinced these gemstones would be a hit. Ranging from an ultramarine to a light purplish blue, Tanzanite quickly became one of the most sought after gemstones after hitting the market.
Tanzanite is a blue variety of the Ziosite family that encompass many different types of gemstones. Ranging a hardness of only 6.5-7 on the Moh's scale, Tanzanite must be treated with care and never come into contact with acids or cleaned by ultrasonic methods.
Today, Tanzanite remains one of the most desirable gemstones available. The deep blue color found in some Tanzanite jewelry is extremely rare and often occurs only in stones over 10 carats. The pale blue and purplish hues are most common in smaller stones.
