Several companies sell loose gemstones often for wholesale prices. However, when purchasing loose gemstones, be sure you are prepared to determine the real value of the stones yourself. Always ask the jeweler for proof of certification and the history of the stones (was it treated using heat or filler?).
Loose gemstones are usually cut in three distinct categories: fancy, cabochon, and faceted.
The cabochon cut gemstone is rounded on top, with a flat bottom, and is polished but not faceted. Star-ruby, garnet, sapphire, and moonstone are common loose gemstones often found cabochon cut.
The faceted cut is any cut that includes different angles or planes, in order to increase the fire or sparkle of the gemstone. Some of the faceted cuts include: round, baguette, marquise, trillion, square, and pear.
A fancy cut is usually a term used to describe any loose gemstone that is not round or square, or any cut that is harder to execute then a basic geometrical shape. Some fancy cuts include the oval, heart, princess, radiant, and the emerald.
Loose gemstones are merely stones that are unmounted. Many people like the look of a particular stone, and want to set it in a jewelry setting of their own choosing. It is also common to find gemstone jewelry that contains a stone which is too big and out of your price range. For example, rubies are particularly expensive, but if bought at a small carat as a loose gemstone- you may be able to afford it.
