The name Lapis Lazuli derives from the Latin, “lapis”, which means stone, and from the Arabic, “azul”, which means blue. Like other gemstones, the beauty and unique stone intrigued ancient peoples and drove them to incorporating the material into their rituals, architecture, and décor.
The Egyptians used the Lapis for seals, jewelry, decorative vases, and even makeup. Lapis jewelry also held meaning for the Romans who believed it had aphrodisiac properties, and the people from the Middle Ages who believed Lapis jewelry promoted health and warded off evil.
When purchasing lapis jewelry, opt for deep blue with violet tints or stones with white veins as these are the most prized. Avoid blue stones with white patches because these are the least valuable.
Lapis earns a hardness of 5-6 on the Mohs scale. Not too fragile and not too durable, you may wear lapis jewelry everyday- but with caution! Avoid harsh household cleaners, perfumes, and makeup. Only clean with a damp cotton cloth on occasion and store in an airtight container.
