Cultured black pearls are pearl concentrations that are secreted inside the black
lipped species of pearl oysters cultivated mainly in French Polynesia. There are six grading
features to evaluate the quality of a black pearl:
- Shape: Round, Semi-Round, Semi-Baroque, Ringed or Circle, Baroque. Size: 8MM to
21MM.Surface Quality: Clean-Very Light Blemished (A), Light Blemished (B), Moderately Blemished
(C), Heavily Blemished (D).Luster: Very high (AAA), High (AA), Medium (A), Soft (B).Nacre
Thickness: Thick, Thin.
- Color: Body color plus overtone.
Ideally, a quality black pearl will exhibit few surface imperfections, enjoy a high surface
luster. Generally, the blacker pearls are most desirable, the finest black
pearls have a green undertone, making them the most sought after pearl available.
Pearls are very soft and need special care. That means it is important to store them separately
and not crammed together with other jewelry. With black pearls
especially, keep in mind that some skin types secrete more acid than others that can degrade the
pearl, eating away the surface material.
If worn regularly keep all pearls, including black pearl jewelry,
away from perfumes and dyes and wash often with a damp cloth.
