Loose diamonds are more commonly found in certain shapes; baguette, emerald, heart, marquise, oval, pear, princess, radiant, round and trillion.

The most popular diamond shape has been the round brilliant because people believed it to be an "ideal cut" that displayed the most brilliance and sparkle in a diamond. The design also allows it to hide flaws and imperfections. However, new technology has made other shapes just as brilliant, such as the princess cut and trilliant cut. Today, there is no such thing as an "ideal cut" when it comes to diamond jewelry.

Fancy diamond shapes such as heart diamond, trilliant diamond, pear diamond, marquise, oval, and princess diamond are all designed to maximize the carat weight. Usually the diamond rough will be cut into whichever shape that requires the least amount of sacrifice. Marquise and oval shapes should have a length that's exactly twice the size of the width. If they are too narrow or too wide, the stone will loose light and appear too dark.

Loose diamonds look great no matter which shape you choose, as long as the quality and the cut is good.
