Platinum's presence on the jewelry scene has had many ups and downs.
This precious metal first became popular among royalty during ancient
Egypt representing power and high status.
During the 1800s in Europe platinum once again saw a surge in popularity. Many coveted jewels such as the
Star of Africa and Hope Diamond were mounted with platinum.
Platinum is
so precious, that if all of the worlds platinum was poured into an Olympic
sized swimming pool, the platinum would reach no higher than the ankle
(gold fills 3 pools).
No wonder why during WWII that the U.S. government
declared platinum a strategic metal used for the manufacture of armaments
and must be reserved for military purposes only. Fortunately, today platinum
is once again a popular metal in jewelry due to it's reputation as being
more friendly to sensitive skin types, more durable, and more enduring
than gold.
