Pearl jewelry at discount, wholesale prices here on GoldenMine.com! Quite possibly, pearls were the first gemstone jewelry before recorded history. Pearl jewelry is the only 100% naturally occurring gemstone and requires no human involvement (cutting, shaping, polishing) in creating a beautiful gem. Before shopping, read the following primer on what to look for and how to care for your pearl jewelry. Types of Pearls:You have your choice of natural, cultured, and imitation or "simulated" pearls. The difference between natural pearls and cultured pearls is natural pearls are solely created by nature whereas cultured pearls are created by nature with a little help by science.
Cultured pearls are formed when a nucleus is placed in a mollusk and over time, nacre is produced around the pearl as a defense mechanism. The longer the pearl is in the mollusk, the more nacre layers form- the larger and more lustrous (quality of light reflections from the pearls surface) the pearl becomes. Simulated pearls, also known as "faux," are entirely man made often from glass or plastic, dipped in ground fish scales, and lacquered with pearlescence. Faux pearl jewelry is good as a more affordable alternative, but the pearl shine will not compare with the real thing.
You can easily distinguish the difference between simulated and cultured pearls by several ways. One, simulated pearls only have a surface shine while cultured pearls have a deep luster. Also, the cultured pearl will feel gritty if rubbed against the incisors versus the simulated pearl will have a smooth feel.Caring for your Pearl Jewelry:
- Dirt and oil from your skin can corrode the nacre. To prevent this, wipe pearls with a damp cloth often.
- Do not keep pearls in an air tight container. Pearls will crack if there is insufficient moisture. Always include a damp cloth when storing your pearl jewelry.
- Use only mild soap or acetone. Never use jewelry cleaner with ammonia or vinegar. Only wear pearl jewelry when you are done applying makeup or perfume. These products can eat holes in the nacre.
- Do not wear pearls when the string is wet- this will attract dirt that is difficult to remove.
- If worn regularly, restring pearls once a year.
