Periculture is the art of growing a pearl. Freshwater pearls are cultured over a long period of time (2-5 years), available in a wide
variety of shapes, colors, sizes (from 3mm up to 12mm), and produce high yields.
Freshwater mollusks inserted with a piece of mantle tissue
form these stunning gems ranging from milky white to deep pastels. Produced in great abundance,
they are the most affordable among all other cultured pearl varities. Jewelers enjoy freshwater
pearls because they lend themselves to creating unique and imaginative jewelry.
Care for Freshwater Pearls:
- Dirt and oil from your skin can corrode the nacre. To prevent this, wipe pearls with a damp
cloth often.
- Do not keep pearls in an air tight container. Pearls will crack if there is insufficient
moisture. Always include a damp cloth when storing your pearl jewelry.
- Use only mild soap or acetone. Never use jewelry cleaner with ammonia
or vinegar.
- Only wear freshwater pearl jewelry when you are done applying makeup or perfume. These products can eat
holes in the nacre.
- Do not wear pearls when the string is wet- this will attract dirt that is difficult to remove.
- If worn regularly, restring pearls once a year.
